'People are emotionally destroyed…' By Sadiah

…Said Aid workers who witnessed the situation in Dhaka, Bangladesh after the worst cyclone the country has experienced since 1991 hit its shores. “We've supplied people with drinking water and food but this is not enough.” So far $450 million worth of damage has been caused and the cyclone, called Sidr, has left 3,113 people dead, 3,447 injured, 1063 missing and millions homeless. Over 1 million families have been affected and 3.2 million people have been evacuated in government provided cyclone shelters.

Victims who have witnessed and been affected by this tragedy such as, Mahbubur Rahman from Dhaka said, “I was away from home when I heard about my home village and that our house was partially destroyed. The wind was very strong and the damage is huge, houses in the village were damaged as well. Many people haven’t received any aid from the government, because there are people who need the help more urgently. The damage is so big; we haven't even started to think how we can meet the cost.”

Although people had two days notice, Cyclone Sidr has caused major damage to the country. In 1991 Cyclone Gorky killed at least 138,000 people and left 10 million homeless. Whereas Cyclone Sidr has killed 3,113 and left over 1 million homeless.

Despite warnings, natural disasters still occur. We just have to hope for the best and us who are more fortunate need to help out when and how we can Good Luck to Bangladesh and I am sorry for everyone who has suffered.

The world of sport... by Dylan

Sports!

Welcome to the world of sports!
This page will inform everything you are looking for on sport…

I would like to start on football because there are lots of interesting facts about how footballers get on with their day to day life.

Firstly, do you know how much footballers earn per year?
HAVA GUESS!
Premiership footballers earn an average of £676000 per year
Too much? FACT

The history of association football, which is also known as soccer, can be traced to various traditional football games played in Europe in ancient times, but the modern game has its roots in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in England in 1863. At the time, football clubs all played by their own, individual codes of rules, and game-day rules had to be agreed upon before they could play one another. On October 26, 1863, some clubs met in London, to create a universal code that would allow clubs to play each other without dispute. The impact of the FA was not immediate as football was still very much an amateur activity. The first professional clubs were formed after working class people took up the sport, and entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to make money from spectators coming to see star players. Once professionalism took hold, the popularity of the game became immense and was soon spread throughout the world by British expatriates.

The history of basketball.

Dr. James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ramsay Township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. The concept of basketball was born from Naismith's school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck-on-a-rock outside his one-room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a "duck" off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
After serving as McGill's Athletic Director, James Naismith moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, where the sport of basketball was born. In Springfield, Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport that was suitable for play inside during the Massachusetts winter for the students at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that relied solely on strength. He needed a game that could be played indoors in a relatively small space. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals.

A normal basketball player earns an average 35 million dollars per year!!!!

Could you POSSIBLY spend that amount of money in a life?

YEAH RIGHT. by dylan

Health Awareness ... by Morgan

Health Awareness

Asthma

I think that many people are over reacting about asthma. It is not a life threatening illness although it is common in many families it is not as bad as other illnesses, diseases and infections which people can die from.

Asthma is when cells and chemicals enter the lungs tissues and the breathing tubes become hyper-reactive. This means the breathing tubes narrow which make it harder for the air to move through the lungs which causes difficulty in breathing.

Symptoms include overnight coughing, wheezing, a tight feeling chest and shortness of breath although asthma is often worse overnight and in the morning any one can have a asthma attack any time of the day. Many different things cause asthma such a pollen, house dust, smoking, exercise, cold air, emotional upsets, mite droppings and chemical irritants.

Asthma can occur in any one at any time in there life it is most common in children and can run in the family, to reduce the risks of unborn babies you can prevent from smoking when pregnant and once born do not expose to passive smoking.

Asthma is the most common problem managed by doctors and a frequent reason for the hospitalisation for children especially in boys. Although England has a high percentage of people with asthma at 14% - 16% of children and 10% - 12% of adults having it Australia has the most people with asthma.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that can occur in people for many different reasons like overweight or obesity or if your pancreas isn’t working properly to produce insulin which your body needs. Insulin stimulates the liver to absorb any unneeded glucose; diabetes is when the body does not produce enough insulin so the level of glucose is too high.

There are two different types of diabetes:
Type 1: Usually starts in childhood or young adult hood and is caused by a server lack of insulin (because most of the cells produced in the pancreas have been destroyed).
Type 2: Usually starts over the age of 40 and develops when the body can’t produce enough insulin or when the insulin produced does not work properly.

In the UK more than 2 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and it is estimated that a further 750,000 people are not even aware that they are living with this disease. Those at risk include
· People over the age of 40
· People of Asian or afro – Caribbean origin
· People who are overweight
· Women who have had babies more than 4kg
· People with a family history of diabetes
Although there is no actual cure for people with type 1 diabetes there is a way to control the amount of glucose in there body by either injecting insulin or tacking insulin tablets once, twice or maybe three times a day, however people with type 2 diabetes often only have to eat a healthy diet as it is normally caused by being over weight or obese.
My opinion on diabetes is that if you are with someone with this disease then you should always be prepared so if they have type 1 diabetes and the worst should happen you could be ready to help by having maybe a bottle of lucozade encase they feel week or if they have type 2 diabetes not to offer them thing with a lot of sugar in.

Faster and better-Games of Today....By Arber

Over the years, gaming has risen from the dusty clouds of the Nintendo to the new technology of the Playstation 3 which some scientists have even traded their computers for.

Its blue ray technology allows game designers to extend the qualities of their games to the limit where graphics look photo realistic.
The blue ray discs can store up to 25GB (6 times more then the ordinary CD!) making it perfect to create breathtaking games such as the new Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The Call of Duty series had always blown the game charts but this year it is sure to wake you up like a face full of ice water.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first person shooter game. It has been driven out of the world-war 2 period and, as the name suggests, been brought to the modern day.

The game has been criticised for being too short where you can finish the campaign mode in 5 or 6 hours. So if you had bought it on a Saturday, on Sunday you will be playing the campaign mode for your second time but even if it’s so short it covers a lot of ground.

The game has breathtaking graphics with some jaw dropping moments and some scenes where you would stop and think, is this a photo?
Its storyline is spellbinding with some scenes where you would look around the room to tell people “I can’t believe that happened”. Each stage you go through the plot gets more intriguing and will leave you with cliff hangers.

This game also has an online mode where you can battle against people all around the world so making this game playable for almost a year.
This game was given a 9/10.

All of this was possible because of the new technology from the Playstation 3 making this consol stand out against the rest.
But you will have to start saving up as it costs at least £300 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare costing £50.00 but I'm telling you, it is worth it.

The Secrets behind Eating Well & Being Healthy By Nazia Ahmed

Health and food is a very vital issue in our lives today. How our intake of healthy, organic food & rate of exercise affects our everyday lives therefore I will be discussing various, common advantages and disadvantages within this topic.

Is Size Zero Actually A Health Hazard?
Think stick thin girls are happy and healthy? Think Again.
Many females are desperate to be a size zero as they think it looks ‘stunning’ and ‘glamorous’. However, I believe there is a big difference between looking good and being SUPER skinny but they don’t seem to realise this.

Would you like to spend half of your life starving yourself until you look like a total skeleton?

Well surely I won’t because I know many other EASY and SAFE ways to look great.

I will always continue eating, of course, but my meals will be balanced & will contain many ranges of vitamins and nutrition’s to keep me healthy and fit. Obviously others would agree with this, in fact this is a common health belief.

Women were especially eager to be a perfect size 10, well forget that because now it is known to be obese after being influenced by magazines. Don’t follow the crowd, make your own trend!

You might think starving yourself has a great impact on your figure but the consequences are extremely dangerous!
Did you know that this is actually an illness which can lead you to many risks?
Well one of my cousin is a “size zero” and she is as skinny as a stick (don’t think that sounds good looking do you?).
Many precautions have been taken to insure she is eating properly; she is taking tablets on regular bases to make sure she is provided with essential nutrition’s such as protein.

In conclusion, I highly disagree with starving yourself for what people call a ‘perfect’ figure because we are all perfect in our own ways.

Every woman has the right....by Fahmida

It is the right of any woman to decide whether they wish to wear the veil or not.
Jack Straw, the leader of House of Commons, commented on the wearing of the veil which led to several arguments and dispute about the wearing of the nicaab and also the attitudes towards them.

“The conversation would be of greater value if the lady took the covering from her face”
His controversial comments have offended thousands of Muslims all around the U.K

Mr Straw claims he did not want to be "prescriptive" but believed that covering peoples faces could make community relations more difficult.

“We are able to relate particularly to strangers by being able to read their faces and if you can't read peoples faces, that does provide some separation”
However every woman has the right to wear what they wish and not be forced to remove or wear the nicaab. Equal rights should be taken in to consideration as well as female rights.
When it comes to religious beliefs, instead of jumping to conclusions, people should be more tolerant and aware of the comment they are about to make.
