Health Awareness ... by Morgan

Health Awareness

Asthma

I think that many people are over reacting about asthma. It is not a life threatening illness although it is common in many families it is not as bad as other illnesses, diseases and infections which people can die from.

Asthma is when cells and chemicals enter the lungs tissues and the breathing tubes become hyper-reactive. This means the breathing tubes narrow which make it harder for the air to move through the lungs which causes difficulty in breathing.

Symptoms include overnight coughing, wheezing, a tight feeling chest and shortness of breath although asthma is often worse overnight and in the morning any one can have a asthma attack any time of the day. Many different things cause asthma such a pollen, house dust, smoking, exercise, cold air, emotional upsets, mite droppings and chemical irritants.

Asthma can occur in any one at any time in there life it is most common in children and can run in the family, to reduce the risks of unborn babies you can prevent from smoking when pregnant and once born do not expose to passive smoking.

Asthma is the most common problem managed by doctors and a frequent reason for the hospitalisation for children especially in boys. Although England has a high percentage of people with asthma at 14% - 16% of children and 10% - 12% of adults having it Australia has the most people with asthma.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that can occur in people for many different reasons like overweight or obesity or if your pancreas isn’t working properly to produce insulin which your body needs. Insulin stimulates the liver to absorb any unneeded glucose; diabetes is when the body does not produce enough insulin so the level of glucose is too high.

There are two different types of diabetes:
Type 1: Usually starts in childhood or young adult hood and is caused by a server lack of insulin (because most of the cells produced in the pancreas have been destroyed).
Type 2: Usually starts over the age of 40 and develops when the body can’t produce enough insulin or when the insulin produced does not work properly.

In the UK more than 2 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and it is estimated that a further 750,000 people are not even aware that they are living with this disease. Those at risk include
· People over the age of 40
· People of Asian or afro – Caribbean origin
· People who are overweight
· Women who have had babies more than 4kg
· People with a family history of diabetes
Although there is no actual cure for people with type 1 diabetes there is a way to control the amount of glucose in there body by either injecting insulin or tacking insulin tablets once, twice or maybe three times a day, however people with type 2 diabetes often only have to eat a healthy diet as it is normally caused by being over weight or obese.
My opinion on diabetes is that if you are with someone with this disease then you should always be prepared so if they have type 1 diabetes and the worst should happen you could be ready to help by having maybe a bottle of lucozade encase they feel week or if they have type 2 diabetes not to offer them thing with a lot of sugar in.
